Key dates
The 2026 general election is on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Before that, each state holds a primary to choose the candidates who appear on the November ballot. Primary dates are set by each state and spread across the year, so they do not fall on a single national day. Registration deadlines also vary by state, and some states allow same-day registration. Check your state’s primary date and registration deadline well ahead of time.
What is on the ballot
Every seat in the U.S. House of Representatives is up in 2026, all 435 of them, because House members serve two-year terms. About one-third of the 100 Senate seats are also up, since senators serve six-year terms that are staggered so roughly a third come up every two years. Many states and localities hold their own races on the same ballot, including governors, state legislators, and local offices.
