This page sets out how What District Am I In decides what to publish, how it stays nonpartisan, and what happens when something is wrong.
Nonpartisanship
This site reports who represents a district and what the public record says about them. It does not endorse candidates, rate members, or recommend how to vote.
Party affiliation is reported because it is a fact about the officeholder. Election results and presidential margins are reported as figures, without commentary on what they ought to mean. Where a district has a strong partisan lean in either direction, the number is presented the same way.
What gets published
- Every factual claim about a member, a district, an election or a procedure comes from a public source. The sources are listed on the how we source our data page.
- Where sources disagree, the relevant chamber’s own roster is treated as authoritative.
- Figures that cannot be verified are left out rather than estimated.
- When data is missing for one district but present for others, the page says nothing rather than filling the gap with generic text.
Corrections
Report an error through the contact page. Include the page address and what looks wrong. Member records, district assignments and election dates are checked against the primary sources and corrected as soon as the error is confirmed.
Corrections are made to the page itself. Political data changes constantly, so this site treats a correction as an update to the record rather than an event to annotate.
Known limits
A ZIP code is a mail delivery route and does not always sit inside a single congressional district. Official rosters are published on their own schedule and can lag a resignation, death or special election. District boundaries change, and ten states redrew their maps between censuses during the 2025 to 2026 cycle. Each of these is described in more detail on the how we source our data page.
